Dr. Alexander Lowe
At a very early age, both his mother and school teachers knew that Alexander would be destined for greatness. His enthusiasm for learning was like no other, especially during science where he'd often teach the teachers a thing or two. His teachers didn't know it at the time, but this was Alexander's escape from his polarising broken home. He had a very loving mother who would always encourage him to do his best and a father who was rarely sober and very abusive.
The abuse Alexander suffered, left deep emotional scars on Alexander. Lenny, his only friend from his childhood, was very supportive, but he was also a very bad influence on Alexander and they'd often find themselves in trouble with the local police.
As Alexander delved deeper into bad habits, he found himself being recruited into a secret society. He would later recruit Lenny as his Shadow and the two spent nearly a decade working together. When Alexander met Mary when he was twenty eight, he abruptly left the society behind and instead became a client, rather than an enforcer.
Over the next three decades, Alexander became a much better person overall thanks to Mary's encouragement and love. He revisited his true passion, science and became a popular figure in the science field, even earning him the title "Rockstar of Science" by TIME magazine in the 90s.
As the decades passed, Alexander and Mary's life became numbingly comfortable. Each day was similar with some minor variances until a fateful day in August 2014, which is where our story begins.

Mary Lowe
Mary first noticed Alexander during her weekly trip to the laundromat. He was mumbling explicits to the machine under his breath which had just taken his 50p without any results. After helping him out, they saw each other a few more times before Mary plucked up the courage to ask him out on a date. A couple of years later, the two married.
To Alexander's surprise, Mary was a very positive influence and always brought out the best in him. He kept his dealings with the secret society from Mary throughout their life together, eventually leaving his role as a Shade to focus on his science career, something Mary heavily encouraged. After leaving the society, he returned years later as a client instead, using the money from his new found fame to cover the expenses. The two led a very cosy lifestyle, which was heavily influenced by Alexander's secret connections to the society.
Leonard Wolfe (Lenny)
Lenny is Alexander's childhood friend and someone that was there for him during all of the traumas of his early life. The support that Lenny provided came with a lot of bad influences, leading Alexander into an early life of crime. The two formed a brotherhood that was only strengthened when he was recruited into the secret society by Alexander. They worked together until Alexander abruptly left the society to pursue his true love, science. This caused a fissure in their relationship which neither really addressed, leaving it to wither to time. Alexander would return years later, but simply as a client of the society, which he paid a significant price yearly for the privilege. Their relationship devolved into business associates as Lenny rose through the ranks of the society.
Hubert Smith
Hubert is a high ranking member of the secret society, whom Lenny reports directly to. He is an operational mastermind that cannot be deceived easily and is regarded highly by his colleagues for his cool head and no "straight to the point" attitude. Hubert is rarely seen in public, only working directly with some of the United Kingdom's most high profile clients.
Dr. Steven Abel
A family man and leader within the scientific community. Steven and his team have been working on a secret project for decades, which if successful would have serious ramifications for not just the scientific community, but the world, which would be forever changed.
Francis Barger
Every office has a Francis, someone who is unapologetically selfish and views themselves as the main character of their own story. He would step on anyone to get an opportunity to elevate himself further.
